DotNetNuke Hosting

 GREAT FEATURE!Minimize

Domain Alias
= Portal
= Complete Site

What does this mean?

Well, when you host a DotNetNuke (DNN) site, you can have several* "Portals".  With the way the system works, if you have www.website1.com as your main site and Portal, you can add a Domain Alias and point it to your site.  In DNN, you set up a new Portal with your alias, lets say www.website2.com.  When someone browses to www.website2.com, it can be a completely different site, because DNN looks at it as a Portal, not a Domain Alias.

For an example, my consulting site at www.jimclay.com is the primary site for that account.  But go to www.jimclay.net which is a domain alias pointing to www.jimclay.com.  You go to what looks like a completely different site!

VERY COOL!!!

* DNN Can handle many portals, but due to the nature of shared hosting, we suggest keeping it reasonable.  If your traffic is very high, you may even want to consider a dedicated server.  If that is of interest please contact us regarding co-hosting.

What is DotNetNuke (DNN)?

First of all this site uses DotNetNuke.

DotNetNuke is an open source web application framework for web site content management.  It is easily enhanced by using "Modules" and "Skins."  There are several Core modules and skins as well as many available for free or to purchase.  Click on the SnowCovered link to the right to see many that are available for very reasonable prices.

Skins offer the ability to change the look and feel of a web site very quickly.  It is the "Theme" of a web site.  The skin can be changed without affecting the actual content.  If you have a company theme or standard layout, you can easily use that to develop a skin.

Modules are the content control of a DNN Portal.  There are several standard modules, such as Text/HTML, Image, Links, FAQs, Banners, Announcements, Surveys, Feedback, and more.  An entire web site can easily be run off of these standard modules.  They also offer visibility and date control.  That is, you can say when a module is visible.  If you want it to be visible for one, two or ten days, just set the start and stop dates for the module.

You can also purchase or have developed custom modules.  Click the SnowCovered link to the right to see many modules available that have been developed.  If you need a custom module developed, please visit www.jimclay.com.

 DNN Setup

Why is there a setup charge and how long will it take?

Because each setup is unique to each domain, there is manual time involved in setting up your DNN site.  This also includes setting up your database.  As with all sites, it can take up to 96 hours for your domain to propagate through the web, but it is usually available within hours.  Once the site is available on the web, your DNN site can be set up for you.  Our goal is to have all pre-installed sites up within 6 to 12 hours, but we cannot guarantee this.  We will do our best to get it up ASAP!

What happened to the DotNetNuke Application packs?

Unfortunately, the vendor for our control panel has not kept up with the latest versions of the available applications.  This means that you would have to upgrade several versions to get the latest features, stability and security.  Because of this, we have decided to remove the Application Packs as an option for DotNetNuke.

What about installation on the eCommerce plan?

If you would like us to install DotNetNuke on your eCommerce Plan, please go to your control panel Extra Features.  There is an option there for installation of DotNetNuke for $25.

What about DotNetNuke upgrades?

You can upgrade yourself or you can hire us to do it.  If you are on the DotNetNuke Plan or the eCommerce Plan with DotNetNuke installed, you can select a version upgrade option in your control panel.  The fee for upgrading is $50, as it take quite a bit more to upgrade than to install.  When we upgrade your install of DotNetNuke, we pull a full site backup as well as a database backup before uploading the new version.  Please contact sales to request information about upgrading your DNN installation.

Can I have more than one DNN install on my hosting plan?

This is not supported.  A plan may contain several domains, but remember, this is shared hosting and with that comes some limitations.  That is why it is only $20/month.  Within a plan you have limited resources.  Even though you can have several domains hosted, we only support one (1) domain within a plan containing an application as large and demanding as DotNetNuke.  This helps ensure the stability of our servers.  The other domains can be used for less demanding sites such as static or very lightly scripted sites.

Other shared hosts may allow things that we don't.  Trust us, we know what we are doing and it benefits EVERYONE on our servers.  We work on a "Good Neighbor" policy.  Please be a good neighbor and don't do things that can cause an issue for everyone else that shares your server!   Do you want to host with someone that keeps things clean and stable or someone who lets anyone do whatever they want.  We are here to be clean and stable!

Additional Resources.

We are planning on having a short tutorial on installation and upgrading of DotNetNuke available.  As soon as we are able to complete this, there will be a link posted here.
